Sumatran Tiger Facts
The Sumatran Tiger is the smallest type of tiger. This is an
inherited trait because this helps the tiger hunt better. Tigers have very large
paws that are used to attack prey and swim at high speeds. The Tiger is the only
type of cat that enjoys water, besides the jaguar. The Sumatran Tiger’s weight
is 7 feet, and the weight is about 200 pounds. The Sumatran Tiger has an average
lifespan of about 10-15 years in its natural habitat. If the Tiger is kept in
captivity, it can live up to 25 years. There are about 250 Sumatran Tigers in
captivity. Each tiger has a unique stripe pattern on them, to tell one from
another.
The Sumatran Tiger is a carnivore, and before it attacks the prey, it stalks it for
about 25 minutes. The Tiger eats large prey such as crocodiles, cattle, goats
and wild boar. The Sumatran Tiger only eats once every 1-2 weeks. The Sumatran
Tiger is very conserving when it comes to eating the captured prey.
The only location of the Sumatran tiger is the Indonesian
island of Sumatra. As you probably know, the Sumatran Tiger is extremely endangered, due to large
amounts of loss of habitat. Most of the Tigers are in specially protected areas, while many
still roam around in the wild. Hunters and Agriculture will soon destroy these habitats if no action is taken soon.
The Sumatran Tiger can mate anytime of the year, producing about
6 cubs. For the first eight months the baby tigers feed off of the mother’s
milk. Young tigers will soon learn how to kill their prey when they are six
months old. When the tiger is one full year of age, he/she will hunt for
themselves. By two years, the tiger is living on its own. A tiger can travel up
to twenty miles in one night just to find prey.
The Sumatran Tiger is not a very social animal. They will scratch
trees to mark their territory. They will also spray on things to mark their
territory. The male tiger will not let another male tiger stay at his area, but
he will let one pass through. Male and female territory can be within each other
for hunting.
These Tigers are extremely endangered, due to deforestation in
the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Many groups and organizations are attempting
to save the Sumatran Tiger. Overall, there are only about 500 Sumatran Tigers
left.
